RESIST and Replace strives to increase the number of policies that reduce the accessibility, acceptability, and use of commercial tobacco in public spaces through strategic youth advocacy and education, as well as increase the number of residents from all generations who actively request tobacco cessation intervention.

In 2020, a youth coalition was established at the Ulysses High School. Part of the work of the youth coalition was to create a RESIST chapter to access and join the statewide advocacy initiative. The students decided to brand their chapter RESIST and Replace, resist commercial tobacco and replace it with a healthy habit, whether that be community advocacy events, strategies, and marketing to reduce commercial tobacco use in all forms.

Our Resist & Replace team conducted a Parks Assessment, during which, they collected and marked tobacco, e-cigarette, and vape trash left in Grant County Parks to learn more about the impact tobacco has on our community. 323 cigarette butts were collected in total.

The tobacco committee which includes two members of the RESIST and Replace chapter have drafted the first version of a smoke free parks and playgrounds policy. Currently, the policy is being reviewed by the city attorney, and then advocacy efforts by the coalition and youth coalition will begin to encourage successful passage by the city of Ulysses and Grant County.
